Some of the most meaningful photographs I make are not found far from home. They happen quietly on the water I know well.
On this morning, the loons moved together across the lake, close enough that their reflection seemed almost part of the family itself. The water was calm, and their dark heads and striking markings stood out against the soft surface. There was tenderness in the way they stayed near one another.
Loons have always seemed to belong to the character of a northern lake—their calls carrying across the water at dawn and dusk, somehow making the wilderness feel both larger and more intimate.
I photographed this moment because of its simplicity. There was no spectacle. There was only closeness, trust, and the gentle movement of a family through still water.
Not every beautiful moment announces itself. Some simply pass quietly beside us.
